This is a vintage studio pottery food steamer. The hand-crafted ceramic dish features a speckled glaze with hand-painted foliage pattern.


In good condition with wear consistent with age and use. Some minor chips on the base rim. Although not marked, the piece can be attributed to the artist who signs "Greenwald".

NOTE: Ceramic food steamers were already used in Neolithic China 6 to 7000 years ago. It is placed above a pot with boiling water. The steam enters through a central chimney rather than through dozens of little holes. In 1970s California, the style resurfaced with artisans.
